Kiwis Have Their Say On Ultra Fast Broadband - 8

Why New Zealanders want an ultra-fast broadband network.

Every week, we will bring you a selection of comments from Vector’s fibre to the door website.

Here’s what Kiwi’s have had to say this week in support of Vector’s effort to bring fibre to the door of Aucklanders …..

I am sick of paying $50 a month for so-called 'high speed' internet when at certain times it takes 30s to load Google!! We currently have third world internet services and it’s about time this changed.

This technology is not new. It was being rolled out in 1999 when I lived in the US. Internet speeds have always been pathetically slow in NZ, it is time this changed. The infrastructure cost is an investment in the future efficiency of this country. I think this decision will have a major effect on the growth of our economy.

I have tried to get Broadband in the last four houses we stayed in with no luck. It seems rural customers are shrugged off which causes me to pay dearly for satellite broadband.

As a commercial property manager we are acutely aware that tenants and owners alike are frustrated with the speed of supply in certain areas of NZ, not to mention the use of the web at home...

I'm a firm believer that technology and advancement goes hand in hand.

Increased Bandwidth is going to usher in a whole new generation of Internet products and you are either set up to use them, or left out in the cold.

Faster Internet, I say YES! It is about time New Zealand catches up with the rest of the world and its technology. It doesn't seem fair that we miss out on the technology that the rest of the world experiences so YES bring it to our door.

I have been waiting a long time for this opportunity to arise in New Zealand and feel it is about time it arrived. As a student I am always looking for fast ways to research and faster internet would obviously provide this. Even though this is only going to be provided to Auckland at this time, I can only hope that this will roll out to the rest of the country. BRING IT TO OUR DOORS!

I support fibre to the door because we're lagging with the rest of the developed world and when it comes to working from home online, bottlenecks and traffic restrictions can hurt your business. I'm sure you'll find that more and more kiwis will begin to work from home and they'll increasingly rely on the internet for their source of income, regular copper wire, for me and my experience of working online just doesn't cut it anymore. I say bring on the fibre! Cheers,

I NEED FASTER INTERNET. Seriously, NZ is WAY behind in nearly everything I consider important these days. Using the internet overseas is like a breath of fresh air, it's just so much better and faster and cheaper!

I support fibre to the door because we use it to access local services, for paying bills, for contacting schools and for work. It can helps the family keep in contact with family overseas, it also helps the children with their homework and keeps us up to date with the rest of the world keep up the good work.

The demands of high-speed internet with copper networks is reaching boiling point. It's only common sense to upgrade our networks to fibre to keep our country running in league with the rest of the world.
TB

Necessary to help bring NZ into 21st century and be considered a 1st world country. Its current broadband system is years behind the UK and USA. It’s a joke.

Internet is a main part of my business, and I'm sick of it being of an acceptable speed one minute then slower than a snail the next, technology is the future and for many people a way of life, to grow we next to expand and to expand we need to be advanced (technology wise), Fibre to the door will be a start! It will be a huge part of the country's infrastructure to come.

What we have now is a very slow substandard service. It results in a huge inefficiency and hidden cost to the Nation when peoples waiting time is accrued. A fibre based service would allow productivity to greatly increase and inspire more creativity.

I had to battle to get broadband... some of my neighbours still can't get it - and we live in Auckland! Insane! Poor telecoms hinder development and makes business slow. NZ Government should value its knowledge economy and its IT industry and help it grow by giving it the best chance available.
Philippa

Well who doesn't want fast internet connection?? Is that a trick question? This is 2010 what are we waiting for? I like to keep up with the times, my family and myself use the net for everything, shopping, banking, booking etc having to wait for pages to load is the last thing we want to worry about - Vector is a household name so we trust you to roll out the big guns. BRING ON FIBRE TO THE DOOR!!!

We've been waiting six years for broadband of any kind. Fibre would be incredible!!

I support fibre to the door because a lot of companies in NZ rely on overseas contacts to increase business and keep up to date with new technology and improvements. Personally, I would love to have faster Internet to be able to download information and videos for my assignments heaps quicker!
GW

The internet is a huge part of our lives and it seems only in the last couple of years has this been noticed within New Zealand, in comparison to the rest of the world. Whatever industry, the internet continues to be part of in one way or another. Slow speeds and low bandwidth are no doubt going to slow things down etc. I feel we need to get with the rest of the world!!!

I live in Oratia - 10 min by car to Henderson central - and yet we cannot get broadband currently. It is not just remote country areas that do not have broadband access. If we all get fibre to our doors, no-one will be disadvantaged ay longer.
