The unthinkable happened this morning with NZ, ranked 78 in
the world, holding world champions Italy, ranked 5th, to a
draw in group play at the World Cup in South Africa.
An
early goal from Shane Smeltz against the run of play set the
scene followed by a penalty which enabled Italy to equalize.
This was followed by an astonishing 50 minutes of defence
and goal keeping by the All Whites.
New Zealand is now 2nd
equal in the pool and needs to beat Paraguay in their final
match in order to qualify for the second round.
