America's longest serving
Senator, Robert Byrd of West Virginia has died at the age
of 92. Connie Lawn sends Scoop this audio report. Had he
lived, Senator Byrd was 4th in the line of succession for
the Presidency.
Byrd's seniority and influence enabled him to steer a great deal of federal money towards projects in West Virginia over the years; in doing so he acquired immense prestige in West Virginia, although some derided his efforts as pork spending designed simply to appeal to his own constituents. His stance on race issues, including determined filibustering of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, was moderated later in his life and he recanted his earlier views.
