Kiwis Have Their Say On Ultra Fast Broadband - 12
Why New Zealanders want an ultra-fast broadband network.
Every week, we will bring you a selection of comments from Vector’s fibre to the door website.
Here’s what Kiwi’s have had to say this week in support of Vector’s effort to bring fibre to the door of Aucklanders …..
Out here in the wop wops, we have to wait for an open port to get broadband & it looks to be quite a wait. I have a family of five & all are moaning at me about how slow the computer is & that they can't download anything, so being a mum, it’s my job to try & keep everyone happy. Plus I miss playing my Facebook games. Having to deal with dial-up takes away my freedom to do everything else that needs to be done around the house. I wanna be able to pay my bills & get back to the washing, not sit on the thing for an hour just to do that.
SR
Home ExecutiveBecause everyone wants a faster connection! I want to be able to download/upload faster, play games faster, stream online faster!
JWI work for an internet company. And I would like to see the state of broadband in New Zealand improve to a place where we no longer even consider 128k a broadband connection. To compete internationally, we need to be faster, and if that takes fibre, then so be it.
SCAdvertisement - scroll to continue readingBecause my business is run on the internet and we need a quality fibre optic network through Auckland for residential use, at a price that more people can afford.
DDRHaving recently returned from London I couldn't believe how slow the connections were over here as well as the expense! We are charged so much more than other well established countries and it’s about time we caught up - we are usually leaders when it comes to technology but somehow we drew the short straw when it came to internet capability.
AM
Office ManagerI had FTTH in Seoul for 1.5 years. I was downloading at speed of 96MB/s (downloading 10 CDs at the same time was completed in 3~5 minutes or so) and actual upload speed was only about 10~20MB/s. Anyway, now I am in Auckland city and my internet speed is 100 times slower... and what’s worse, internet costs more than twice and usage is limited! What a rip off.
JKNew Zealand lags behind the rest of the world in cheap, high speed communications technology. Vector is in a great position to be able to deliver this to every Auckland home and business, with no "weak links" or bottle necks.
AC
Civil DesignerI think it would be beneficial to the whole country, both business and private users.
GE
TechnicianHigh speed bandwidth and technology is absolutely essential to keep pace in the fast transforming world
VIInternet is an integral part of my life and I need the speed for my work.
MW
Self-employedBusiness - fast accurate data/document/plan transmission. Family - contact round the world via VoIP, as well as rapid exchange of photos. Leisure - on line gaming, TV and movie screening. All of the above are absolute requirements for a modern society and to make NZ a business friendly country and a desirable place to live.
ANI run a software consulting company. Faster internet will make remote work much easier. With increasing amount of remote access and needing the ability to work at all times of the day this would certainly ease my pain!
EB
Software ConsultantBecause the internet speeds here are shocking!
JB
Project ManagerNZ needs a faster and better connection to stay connected to the world.
RO
LawyerBecause fast broadband is now a household necessity....this country is already behind with infrastructure, not to mention in a very isolated part of the world...so we need to invest in communications! - Fibre is the way forward.
LDIt's fast, quick and instant. It will help us learn, develop and achieve things a lot faster if not better in life and make things sooo much easier with Broadband. I support fibre to the door!
MP
StudentBecause I'm sick of New Zealand having awful internet when countries far less developed then us can provide better broadband with less problems!
MWThis year, I worked and lived in Europe for a couple of months. The difference in speed is pretty massive and coming back to much slower home speeds was not a nice experience.
ST
IT Support ConsultantAs New Zealand has fallen behind in the Internet speeds compared to the rest of the world. I think it's great that vector is doing something about it!! Great job!
ZHI too think fibre to the door is a huge opportunity for New Zealand, and would like to see Vector chosen to roll out fibre to the door of Auckland homes and businesses.
DAI support fibre to the door because I would like faster and better broadband.
AMBecause I want the fastest, most affordable internet I can get.
ZH
SecurityThe internet is the communication format of the future. Its uses in education, entertainment can not be understated. The ability to research topics quickly can literally save lives. We need to provide the best for our Kiwi future and providing world leading connectivity will enable us to better communicate on a global level.
GR
Systems AdministratorClearly it is the best solution and the time to install it to the door is when the major infrastructure is being installed. It is most effective time-wise and cost-wise to do it all at once. NZ needs to be as up to date as it can be in this modern age of it and internet communications.
JL
ReceptionistBelieve it or not, internet & phone bills go down with fibre optic connection. I have experienced it in South Korea. It used to cost me around NZ$80 to get home phone line and ADSL connection. Then when we got fibre to door, the cost went down to NZ$40 and I was downloading DVDs and games in god's speed. And by god's speed means you can download DVDs at least 10 times faster than watching them in real time.
CASNew Zealand as a whole cannot live on copper, if we are to be taken seriously fibre is needed so we can compete with other countries in every aspect in life since the internet is now one of the single most important things now...apart from water and food.
JTThis is a huge technology boost and benefit to the country. Can't wait!
BH
Service TechnicianNZ needs to have the best internet service it can to keep up with the rest of the world and I want it for myself. I have friends in countries like Chile who have a far better and cheaper service.
TG
Social WorkerSick of been so far behind the rest of the world with internet speed and usage caps.
CA
BaristaThe internet is vital to today's economy. New Zealand suffers in this area, and a better internet service would greatly help increase foreign investment and encourage innovation. This is needed in order to ensure New Zealand's economic future, and I am completely happy spending my tax dollars on this - much more so than other projects in recent years.
AMThe availability of reliable, fair-priced and high-speed internet will become a key facet in the upskilling of ordinary people and the further adoption of Information Technologies into ordinary life. As a Power Technology User (net-head), I see the advantages of being able to access 100MBPS+ internet; 1. Full Duplex Audio/Videoconferencing with seamless high frame transmission rates, 2. Increased network-capable consumer devices and Server/Client support, 3. Integrated Security/Resource Management systems, 4. External access to private networks/files via WWW, 5. Ability to integrate SAAS as an individual/family with similar SLAs as enjoyed by SMEs, 6. Ability to develop and support community interaction programmes, 7. Enhanced digital service provision by Government agencies and Statutory Authorities and adoption by consumers, and, 8. Increased opportunities for children to create, share, develop and commercialise applications from experiential learning at home. This list is by no means exhaustive however there are benefits that I cannot even imagine due to our current technological epoch. Of course, concerns like protocol security, information privacy, identify verification/repudiation, civil rights etc will also have to be addressed as rapidly as the general bandwidth to a community increases. As a consumer who is locked into a service contract delivered via the "copper loop", which is restricted in monthly bandwidth allowance and transmission speed, being forced to maintain a landline that I do not need nor desire, I welcome any efforts to further the implementation of Fibre to the Door. If there is any way that I may assist, please feel free to contact me.
BM
Power Technology UserBecause I'm so bored due to slow internet speeds (although it's my fault because I used up all the bandwidth). Now reduced to DIAL UP!!!
MDFast Internet connections are great for research! Entertainment … anything really. Why would you want something inferior when you can have something much better?
SL
StudentSpeed, Speed and more speed. Allow me to work from many places as if I was actually at work.
RM
Data Centre ManagerWe need a reliable, high band width, versatile system to stay on the edge of the creative wave and ensure our family have the opportunity to participate in the latest in education and entertainment.

The Government plans to give New Zealand a complete fibre to the door ultra-fast broadband network. Vector thinks that’s a great idea and is hoping to help them do it and Scoop.co.nz also thinks its something well worth discussing.
