White House Apology For Official Pushed To Quit
Connie Lawn: White House Apology For Official Pushed To Quit
- Connie Lawn: The White House is apologizing to a black woman, Shirley Sherrod, who was unfairly fired from her job as a rural state director in Georgia.
She was fired by Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vlasack (one of the officials who met with Prime Minister Key when he was in Washington). The Obama Administration was reacting to a short section of video on a Conservative blog, which appeared to show she discriminated against a white farmer.
Had they heard the entire tape, they would have learned she overcame her own prejudices to save the farm of a white farmer, She was discussing an incident which was 24 years old, but her statements were made recently at an NAACP Convention.
The White House and Secretary of Agriculture apologized for sloppiness and a rush to judgement. She has been offered a new job, if she wants it. But, the country has learned another lesson about prejudice, stereotypes, and unfair reporting.
