1210 - Police Minister on Media disrespect.
At the top of the show, we hear from Police Minister Judith Collins. Now, yesterday Ms Collins was speaking about attacks on police officers. But she raised a few eye-brows by suggesting negative media reports of police conduct, and pursuits were fuelling a lack of respect for the country’s officers. Her words: it is important to acknowledge that over the last decade or so there have been numerous attacks in the media on police, reports into police conduct, all these sorts of things. None of which have encouraged people to increase their respect for police. I spoke with the minister this morning to argue that it’s the conduct - not the reporting of it - which is doing as she says. Hear what she had to say in a few minutes...
1225 - Arizona Immigration Law - Alison Parker Human Rights Watch
Around 12.25 we head to the United States where human rights groups are claiming a victory in their fight against Arizona’s controversial new immigration laws. A federal judge has blocked some key provisions in the legislation - the ones that were getting people the most riled up - namely: the requirement of immigrants to carry their papers with them, and the requirement of police to determine the immigration status of those they detain. The judge reminded Arizona law-makers that it’s the FEDERAL government who sets immigration law. Arizona says it’ll appeal the ruling - the governor calls it a temporary bump in the road. This morning I spoke to (above) about the situation, and whether this really is a victory against racial profiling.
1235 - Dear Science with Aimee
Peter’s still on holiday, so the delightful Aimee dutifully steps in for Dear Science today. She’ll be taking a look at scary reports that the basis of the ocean food-chain - phyto-plankton - are in serious decline. Think about what happens when you take out the first stage in the food chain... She’ll also fill us in on new research that shows not having friends might be as bad for you as smoking. Sorry to all our hermit listeners.
1245 - File Sharing Ban - CFF at the Select Committee
And then at the end of show we hear from Bronwyn Holloway-Smith from the Creative Freedom Foundation - an organisation representing thousands of New Zealand artists and copyright holders. She appeared before the commerce select committee today - who’re looking at a bill to crackdown on internet piracy. So what was CFF there to say?
