1210 - 90 Day trial a trap, employment lawyer Max Whitehead

First up on the show we’ll be taking a closer look at the 90 day employee trial law, you know the ones - often referred to as the “fire at will” law because that’s what it allows employers to do. Well, the law had its first test case in court last week, and Heather Smith a pharmacy assistant was found to have been unjustifiably dismissed. My first guest, Max Whitehead, is an employment lawyer who says Smith’s case shows the 90 day law is a trap - for employers. Fire at will, he says, is a little misleading.

1225 - Paul Buchanan

Then at 12.25, a voice familiar to these airwaves joins us to discuss the US pulling out its combat troops from Iraq. Expert in international politics and security Paul Buchanan spoke to me this morning about President Obama’s sombre tone in announcing to Americans the end of combat operations, and the realism on display when defence secretary Robert Gates admitted the war was waged on false pretences.

1235 - Dear Science

Aimee Whitcroft steps in again for Dear Science at 12.35, thanks to the wonderful people at the Science Media Centre. Aimee puts the microscope on the IPCC review which came back this week, scientists mapping the apple genome for some reason, and the other Apple (that with a capital “A”) launching something called Ping. Social network, music and Chris Martin are all involved. His daughter’s called Apple too - talk about synergy!

1245 - John Barrow, Federated Farmers Tararua President

And then at 12.45 we’ll hear from (above). We’ll be talking about the Manawatu River, which is dirty, lacking life and culturally compromised. But it actually is NOT those things say Federated Farmers. See, that’s emotional language that does not reflect the scientific reality. What is the scientific reality? The river is degraded. Federated Farmers have refused to sign a Leaders Accord - which 27 other governmental, business, community and iwi groups HAVE signed - because of its emotive language. And because it says fish, rather than native fish or something. Instead, Fed Farmers have made their own accord - which they call the Peoples’ Accord - and it’s basically the same as the real one, with an extra sentence here and there. Why are they being so pedantic and stubborn? The Environment Minister is urging the farmers group to get on board with the rest of us, what are the chances?
