Newsflash: Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak Steps Down
The President of Egypt Hosni Mubarak has stepped down less than 24 hours after addressing the nation and saying he would not do so.
The announcement was made by Vice-President Omar Suleiman a little over 2 hours ago in a television broadcast.
However the Vice-President has not assumed power in the President's place, instead the Armed Forces High Council has taken control of the apparatus of government. The council is headed by Defence Minister Mohamed Hussein Tantawi.
Under the constitution in the event that the President steps down power is supposed to pass to the Speaker of Parliament, or immediate elections are supposed to be called.
The thousands of protestors in Tahrir Square have been celebrating the departure of Mubarak who has ruled Egypt for three decades.
