Gaza Video Report: What Gazans Think of the UN Bid
Gaza Video Report: What Gazans Think of the UN Bid
Report – By Julie Webb-Pullman.
In recent days I
interviewed Gazans working in an office building in Gaza
City, people in the street, and some students at the Al
Azhar University. I asked first what they thought of
Presdient Abbas taking the bid for statehood to the United
Nations, and secondly, whether they thought it would make
any difference to life in Gaza if successful.
Many expressed concern that it was Abbas acting alone, without consultation with Gazans, or even other political parties, others said they already 'have' a state as per the 1949 UN partition, 1988 declaration of independence, and the numerous UN resolutions upholding pre-1967 borders, but the international community fails to accord it proper recognition or enforcement.
As for making a difference, there was a mix of cynicism, confusion, and fear - and little real expectation of change for the better, although plenty of hope for it.
