Connie Lawn on Moore’s Speech in Washington
"This is the best speech I have ever heard from a diplomat." That was the typical reaction from several of the guests and students, who heard Ambassador Mike Moore deliver the annual ANZAC lecture.
The speeches usually rotate each year between the New Zealand and Australian Ambassadors, or other dignitaries from both countries. The event is sponsored by the Georgetown Center for Australian and New Zealand Studies, or CANZ.
The speech was
comprehensive, and the response to the questions was even
better. It gave Mike Moore the chance to display his self -
effacing humor. Once again, the warmth between him and
Australian Ambassador Kim Beazley was evident.
Mike Moore devoted much of the remarks to discussing the improved relations between the United States and New Zealand. He looked forward to ceremonies in New Zealand in July, to formally welcome back the US Marines (although some are exercising with the NZ troops now, which is seen as a major advance). Those whose family endured the Second World War credit the US Marines with helping New Zealand survive in some terrible times.
