Werewolf Edition #33 : How Romney Is Stealing The Presidency
Werewolf Edition #33 – How Romney Is Stealing The Presidency
From Werewolf Editor Gordon Campbell

Enter the Wolf!
Hi and welcome to the 33rd issue of Werewolf, in which we face the prospect that in six months time, Mitt Romney may become the most powerful man on earth – and our cover story this month analyses the restrictions on voting rights that his minions have been busily putting in place in order to make that happen. Voter ID laws that target Democrat leaning voters among the poor and racial and linguistic minorities - and the fightback against such laws - will be a major subtext of this year’s presidential campaign.
In this month’s issue, Alison McCulloch completes her two part examination of the effects of gold mining on the community of Waihi . In a separate story in this issue, Alison also marks the 100 year anniversary of the 1912 strike in Waihi that became a turning point in this country’s labour relations and political history - and she outlines the programme of an upcoming conference being held to mark the centenary. In July New Zealand hosted Damien Echols and a new film West of Memphis about the WM3 case, and in this issue we take stock of the current state of the debate about the case . A few weeks ago, Auckland business lobbyist Michael Barnett made a plaintive plea for the Auckland City Council to consider public private partnerships as the best answer for the city’s transport funding needs, and in this issue we offer evidence from Britain as to why that would be a terrible idea , and why Auckland is on the right track here.
In this issue of Werewolf, we also welcome a new writer in Hayden Currie, who draws on his experience as an artist and billsticker in Wellington to examine the thorny issues that arise when there are too few inner city walls available , and too many posters and events vying for public attention. In his movie feature this month, Philip Matthews takes stock of the new Batman movie , while the career of the charismatic singer songwriter Fiona Apple is the focal point of this month’s music column The Complicatist. In his column From the Hood, satirist Lyndon Hood asks whether the government’s failure to turn up for work on providing credible opportunities for beneficiaries should be earning the government some stern, toughlove attention down at the WINZ office.
Thanks to Lyndon Hood and Alastair Thompson for helping me post this issue online. Werewolf is a thank you to Scoop readers and intended as an outlet for local writers and artists. If you want to be involved, contact me at gordon@scoop.co.nz

Already several Scoop readers have decided to subscribe on a recurring monthly basis. We thank them greatly. But more are needed.
