South Sudan rebels hold key oil-producing city 22 Dec 2013 South Sudan's central government lost control of the capital of a key oil-producing state Sunday, the military said, as renegade forces loyal to a former deputy president seized more territory in fighting that has raised fears of [CIA-engendered] full-blown civil war in the world's newest country. Bentiu, the capital of oil-rich Unity state, is now controlled by a military commander loyal to former Vice President Riek Machar, said Col. Philip Aguer, the South Sudanese military spokesman. The armed rebels were said to be in control days earlier of some of South Sudan's oil fields, which have historically been a target for rebel movements, 'endangering' the country's economic lifeblood.

The National Security Agency has also provided "substantial eavesdropping help" to the Colombian government, according to the Post. And the US provided Colombia with GPS equipment that can be used to transform regular munitions into "smart bombs" that can accurately home in on specific targets, even if they are located in dense jungles. White House Tries to Prevent Judge From Ruling on Surveillance Efforts --The Justice [sic] Department wants the judge to dismiss the matter without ruling on whether the programs violated the First or Fourth Amendment. 22 Dec 2013 The Obama administration moved late Friday to prevent a federal judge in California from ruling on the constitutionality of warrantless surveillance programs authorized during the Bush regime, telling a court that recent disclosures about National Security Agency spying were not enough to undermine its claim that litigating the case would jeopardize state secrets. In a set of filings in the two long-running cases in the Northern District of California, the government acknowledged for the first time that the N.S.A. started systematically collecting data about Americans' emails and phone calls in 2001, alongside its program of wiretapping certain calls without warrants.

Bush first authorized the spying in October 2001, as part of the Terrorist Surveillance Program, weeks after the Sept. 11 attacks.
