Microsoft boosts Azure's enterprise street cred with SAP
Enterprise Resource Planning or ERP is dreary. Yet it's the essential plumbing that keeps most large businesses ticking along by managing financials, tracking inventories and managing manufacturing.
SAP dominates ERP, so Microsoft needed to cut a deal with the company as it positions its Azure cloud service for enterprise customers. SAP's apps are already available on Amazon Web Services.

By the end of June, Microsoft and SAP will support SAP Business Suite software, SAP Business All-in-One solutions, SAP Mobile Platform, SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise (SAP ASE) and the developer edition of the SAP HANA platform on Azure.
The deal isn't a one way street, Microsoft may have needed SAP's seal of approval, but SAP also needs to show its customers that it can play nice with more than one cloud vendor. That became pressing once SAP's rival Oracle decided its software would run on Azure.
And it comes at a time when SAP seems to stumbling over its strategy. There are media reports the company is about to go through a major round of layoffs as it prepares to commit further to cloud computing.
