Child Poverty in Aotearoa - Full series

CPAG is delighted to support a new TV series about child poverty in Aotearoa created by lawyer, journalist and social activist Catriona MacLennan.

The first episode of the six-part series gives an overview of child poverty in New Zealand in the lead up to the 2014 budget featuring interviews with Dr Nikki Turner; Nadia Shanab and Associate Professor Mike O'Brien.

Subsequent episodes focus on key issues including health, housing, education, early childhood education and care, and family incomes. Catriona will talk to leading experts from a range of disciplines and organisations about the impact of poverty on children and practical solutions for change.

CPAG spokesperson Janfrie Wakim said, "CPAG has sponsored the series to raise public awareness of child poverty in New Zealand in the lead up to the general election. Catriona's commitment to exploring this issue and her strong focus on solutions is impressive and we hope the series will encourage political parties to include detailed policies in their manifestos to address child poverty."

Episode 2: Health - Catriona MacLennan interviews Professor Innes Asher and Dr Rhys Jones about the impact of poverty on child health, and Hone Fowler and Tupetoa Ronald Tanielu about Maori and Pasifika child deprivation.

Episode 3: Housing - Interview with Alan Johnson; interview with Mangere College nurse Heather Laxon about wrap-around health and social services for students.

Episode 4: ECCE - Episode Four focuses on early childhood care and education and features interviews with Carol Smith (Te Rarawa no Ahipara, Te Whare Wananga o Wairaka) and Lucy Koro (Fa'amasani Aoga Preschool/ Daycare) about Maori and Pasifika culture in ECCE and with Linda Petrenko (Small Kauri Childcare Centre) and Meg Moss (MARC Early Learning Centre) about difficulties in accessing fees subsidies, as well as the role of ECCE in picking up undiagnosed health issues.

Episode 5: Education - Episode Five focuses on education. Catriona MacLennan interviews Manurewa East School principal Phil Palfrey and Dr Vicky Carpenter of the University of Auckland. We also get a young person's perspective on how to address child poverty from Mosa'ati Mafile'o.

Episode 6: Providing adequate family incomes – Associate Professors Susan St John and Gail Pacheco; Professor Jonathan Boston; putting child poverty on the map in election year.
