Corrections Minister Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga and Chief Executive Ray Smith today announced the Department of Correction would take over the management of Mount Eden Corrections Facility.
The announcement follows evidence of organized violence, contraband, and prisoners accessing staff equipment in the prison. The Minister said the decision was made after new allegations came to light contradicting earlier assurances from Serco.
Both emphasised the safety and good management of the prison was a priority. They encouraged anyone with knowledge related to events and management of the prison to come forward for their investigations.
