While it wasn’t quite a carnival atmosphere there was certainly a neighbour’s BBQ vibe on Lambton Quay from 10AM this morning. As the rumble of the buses ceased, the streets began to fill with people. By Midday it was difficult to move on the golden mile.
Thousands of people gathered in central Wellington today. There were children, adults, construction workers, parents and at least one fisherman. While the numbers were huge, the atmosphere was extremely relaxed and good-natured. People talked to their neighbours and helped each other get items up to the parade for autographs. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen such a convivial crowd.
The parade itself wended through town slowly to the cheers and adoration of the crowd. A lot of signatures were made; at one point I’m pretty sure I saw Beauden Barrett sign a toddler’s back.
Sonny Bill Williams and Dan Carter received huge cheers and Julian Savea was greeted with great warmth by his hometown.
The biggest cheers were reserved for the final float which carried Steve Hansen, Richie McCaw and the cup itself. Hansen had decided his job was to facilitate autographs for Ritchie and caught and held rugby balls for the All Blacks captain with aplomb.
