Between The Fires Of War And The Hope Of Life

Opinion Piece Dr. Nasim Hameda Orthopedic Surgeon

Nothing resembles the pain of Gaza — not its nights, nor its mornings that rise over the rubble of homes and hearts. I write these words from the heart of the hospital, where I have lived for weeks, breathing pain as I breathe hope, moving between operating rooms and the wounded, carrying my heart in my hands and my eyes fixed on every patient, as if each one were my son, my brother, or my friend.

I am a doctor — an orthopedic surgeon — living the war in all its depth. I haven’t left the hospital since this madness began. Not because I can’t, but because I cannot bear to leave the wounded of my people alone in the midst of these massacres. The bombing doesn’t stop, the blood doesn’t dry, and fear never leaves — but duty is stronger than anything, and love is greater than all.

With every patient who arrives, I see a life clinging to us. Amid a severe shortage of medical supplies and a constant influx of the wounded, we perform complex surgeries with the simplest tools. We innovate, we strive, and we do our best to save what can be saved. We stitch wounds not just with needles, but with conscience, patience, and prayers. We perform surgeries under bombardment — sometimes by candlelight. These are not acts of heroism, but our duty to the land and its people.

The fear that the next patient on the operating table may be someone I love never leaves me. Every explosion makes my heart leap, yet I hold on to my strength. We have no choice but to continue, because we know that every life we save is a small victory against the machine of death.

Despite everything, life still beats within us. We still believe in hope. Our children deserve to live. Our women deserve safety. Our people deserve freedom. We carry no weapons — only knowledge and conscience. We fight with medicine and compassion. We resist with love and survival.

Gaza is bleeding — yes. But it will not die. We are here, and we will remain, until life returns, and justice prevails, and the sun of freedom rises once again over the land of Palestine.

We are the doctors of this land… and the guardians of its dignity. And we will continue to serve our people — until the last heartbeat, the last breath, and the last wound is healed.
