CERVICAL INQUIRY: The inquiry into the under-reporting of cervical cancer smears is began in Gisbourne today. The Inquiry will work to decided whether Gisbourne Patholigist Dr Michael Bottrill misdiagnosed over 400 cervical cancer smears. The woman affected by the inquiry will also give evidence today.

BUNKLE IN CERVICAL INQUIRY: The National Party says the Associate Minister for Woman’s Affairs Phillida Bunkle may face a conflict of interest by taking part in the inquiry. Ms Bunkle represents a women’s group taking part in the inquiry and also has the power to cross examine witnesses.

WATSON APPEAL: Lawyers for the convicted murderer Scott Watson have begun their appeal to the case strongly attacking the admissibility of evidence which blackened Mr Watson’s character.

ACC APPEAL: The Accident Compensation Corporation has lost an appeal against paying out ACC to a elderly woman cut off when she began receiving superannuation. The Court of Appeal has ruled that the ACC has to reimburse the woman after her payments were cut off.

YACHT RESCUE: Four people are being taken to Great Barrrier Island after being rescued from a sinking yacht near the island this morning.

SNAKE FOUND: A snake has been found clinging to the bottom of a container in the Port of Auckland – the third such discovery in a month. Normally only one snake is found every year.

GUN LOBBY: Gun owners are pressuring the Government to throw out law changes which would require them to separately register every weapon they used. The National Rifle Association has taken its concerns to Parliament.

PILOT CASE: The case of the Ansett Pilot charged with manslaughter has been deferred to the middle of the year.

WHALE MEAT: Government representatives will gather in Kenya to discuss moves to ease restrictions on trading in whale meat.
