Avalanche Tragedy X2 - Work Place Safety - Pacific Islanders In Crisis - Hospital Waiting Lists - School Bullying - Rotorua Geyser

AVALANCHE TRAGEDY: An avalanche in the Southern Alps killed two young climbers yesterday afternoon. Searchers found the bodies of the two climbers today after one of the party of four walked out for six hours to raise the alarm.

AVALANCH TRAGEDY: The tragedy has stunned teachers and students at Logan Park high school, who said both of their past students who died were keen outdoor climbers. The youths were not carrying emergency locator beacons which could have saved them. The mountain they were climbing was considered safe by experts who said it was a mountain used for young climbers “to cut their teeth.”

WORK PLACE SAFETY: On the eve of national work place safety day a Transrail worker lost his life when a train carriage rolled onto him. There have been 16 work place related deaths so far this year.

PACIFIC ISLANDERS IN CRISIS: A bleak picture has been painted tonight of the countries Pacific Islanders population with recently released statistics showing they lag behind in life expectancy earn less and live in overcrowded conditions. Community leaders believe Pacific Islanders need assistance to solve their own problems. The Government agrees there is a major problem with Pacific Islanders in relation to health and says they are working with community groups to solve the problems.

HOSPITAL WAITING LISTS: The Government also is putting more money into hospital waiting lists funding more than 5000 elective surgery cases this year.

SCHOOL BULLYING: Research into bullying shows 75 per cent of high school students have been bullied. Schools using a “whole school program” eliminating violence say the care programme is having positive results.

ROTORUA GEYSER: Rotorua’s huge geyser Pohutu has been blowing non stop for more than forty days, a new record since records of the geothermal activity began. Scientists put the change down to better management of the natural energy resource.
