Shooting Victim - Waitara Tensions - Maori & Police - Police Response - Labs Kept Secret - Invercargil Campaign

SHOOTING VICTIM: The victim of the police shooting is laid to rest in Waitara with the feelings of Maori in the district still running high over the incident. The tangi was an emotional one, a haka of farewell at Orewa Marae and then a slow procession to Waitara cemetary. Five Maori MPs visited the funeral today and want answers from the inquiries into the incidient.

WAITARA TENSIONS: Tensions have spilled over in Waitara when police evacuated their station after a woman threatening to shoot the station up. Police made no arrests this morning but say the family of the dead man has been difficult to deal with. Feelings over the incident have remained high.

MAORI & POLICE: More revalations today of major problems between Maori and police – a report leaked to One News paints a damning picture of police attitudes to Maori with widespread racism and violence alleged. Another report on the matter will be released soon.

POLICE RESPONSE: In response to the report Police say significant developments are under way to deal with Maori issues.

CONSTABLE STABBED: In South Auckland a constable in lying in hospital after being stabbed by a man investigated as being a prowler. The man’s partner acted quickly to save the man who was stabbed by a large kitchen knife.

LABS KEPT SECRET: There’s alarm tonight over decision to keep secret the names of five laboritories who have had similar reporting rates of cervical cancer abnormalities than former Gisborne pathologist Dr Michael Bottrill. Lawyers for the inquiry say the results are preliminary ones only and would cause unneccesary alarm if they were released without further study.

INVERCARGIL CAMPAIGN: NZ’s southern most city is planning a campaign to get people to settle there. Invercargil has now the dubious reputation as being the countries fastest shrinking city. It used to be the ninth biggest city in the country.
