LOVE BUG: A new virus called the Love Bug is crashing computer systems around the world. The virus which copies itself to every address in the users address book, deletes certain files on the down-loader’s CPU. There are indications that the bug may have come from the Philippines. The FBI is investigating.

LOVE BUG IN NZ: In New Zealand the virus has hit some of New Zealand’s major companies. NZ Xtra customers and others can down load the virus from the Telecom site. Meanwhile the internet provider IHUG is deciding whether it can provide a virus filter to its customers.

SCHOOL POLICE: The Principal at James Cook high school says the programme to have a police officer permanently established at his school will keep his students on the straight and narrow.

POLICE IN WAITARA: There will be an increased police presence in the town of Waitara, 25 police officers are investigating the case and five more Maori liaison officers are dealing with the family.

SIERRA LEONE CRISIS: The United Nations secretary general Kofi Annan is visiting Sierra Leone to try and diffuse a crisis where a rebel leader is holding UN workers hostage.

RADIO FREQUENCIES: The Government’s Maori MPs have welcomed the sale of of four blocks of radio spectrum to a pan Maori Trust. However Alliance MP Willie Jackson says the $5 million given to the Trust could be increased.

TREATY CLAIMS: The largest of the five Muruwhenua tribes says it has given up hope of a combined settlement of Far North land claims.

LEGIONAIRE’S DISEASE: The Ministry of Health is carrying tests on four New Zealanders for legionnaire’s disease as the number of confirmed cases in Melbourne rises to 66.

LICENSE RULING: The High Court has reserved its decision over the legality of the new photo drivers licenses following a Lower Hutt woman’s court case against the Government about the new scheme.

LIVINGSTON MAYOR: The Independent Candidate “Red” Ken Livingston looks set to become the Mayor of London, causing a major embarrassment to Tony Blair’s administration.

TWINS DIE: The Siamese twins Faith and Hope Emberson have died this morning in their mother’s arms.

TASMANIAN REGENERATION: Australian scientists hope to regenerate an extinct animal, genetically engineering Tasmanian Tigers by cloning a gene from a tiger preserved in formaldehyde.
