CIGARRETTES UP AGAIN: A nasty shock for smokers, cigarettes are going up by over a dollar after Michael Cullen announced the tax move while Parliament was under extraordinary urgency. The tax increase will put another $110 million into Government coffers.

WAITARA INCIDENT: The Race Relations Councilliator Rajen Prasad is visiting Waitara meeting local Te Atiatwa iwi to investigate allegations of police racism. He says people at the town do have issues to raise. Meanwhile Maori MPs and Minister of Maori Affairs Dover Samuels met with police

WAITARA POLICE INVESTIGATIONS: Meanwhile Police Investigations are continuing and they want to speak with witnesses who may have seen the shooting. Meanwhile in Parliament MPs have debated the Government’s handling of the shooting.

MANSLAUGHTER VERDICT: Twenty eight year old Wanganui man Ricky Manu was sentenced 7 years for manslaughter after he drove his car through an intersection during a police chase, killing a solo mother.

SIERRA LEONE VIOLENCE: In Sierra Leone gunfire erupted in the capital city of Freetown as a cease fire between the Government and rebels temporarily broke down. Meanwhile Britain has sent in troops to rescue British nationals in the area.

PHILIPPINE POLICE: In Manila Philippines police have arrested a suspect in the Love Bug computer virus case. Another a woman who is believed to be the brains behind the scene is also in custody. However the computer behind the virus is yet to be found. Philippines legislation does not cover computer virus attacks. An American company said the virus caused about $1 billion worth of damage affecting 78 million computers worldwide.
