Police Racism - NBR Name Decision - Waipareira Trust - Samoan Murders - US Forest Fires - Greats Snubbed
POLICE RACISM: Four out of ten New Zealanders think that racism exists in the police. New Zealander’s are evenly split over whether there is racism in the police – 43 per cent take both sides. Police have admitted they have a problem with some officers perceptions, but say that the high level of offending amongst Maori has not helped the situation. The survey came in response to the Steven Wallace shooting in Waitara.
NBR NAME DECISION: Public opinion is also running high against a business newspaper the National Business Review who has agreed to publish the name of the officer who shot Steven Wallace in Waitara. The Police Association chairman says he is “gutted” by the move which he says will put the officer at risk and cause him and his family unnecessary stress. The NBR has defended its move on the grounds of public accountability and openness.
WAIPAREIRA TRUST: John Tamihere said he feels vindicated he over the Serious Fraud Office’s decision to cease investigation into the Waipareira Trust. But ACT leader Richard Prebble has vowed to continue his investigation next week.
SAMOAN MURDERS: In Samoa the death sentences of two politicians convicted of murdering a Cabinet Minister have been commuted to life imprisonment.
US FOREST FIRES: In the United States out of control forest fires in Los Almos New Mexico are still raging destroying 15,000 acres of crops and over 300 homes.
GREATS SNUBBED: Two of New Zealand’s Olympic greats Dick Quax and Rod Dickson say they feel snubbed from not being invited to carry the Olympic torch through New Zealand.
