MEDICATION NOT TAKEN: A coroner’s inquest into the deaths of two flatmates in Auckland has heard one wasn’t taking his medication for a mental illness. At the time the mentally disturbed man was under the care of Waitemata Health, which an independent report showed had serious lapses in their care for him.
EQUESTRIAN MEETING: The New Zealand Equestrian Federation has convened a special meeting to discuss their reaction to sex and drugs allegations made against champion equestrian Mark Todd by a British tabloid newspaper.
FIJI CARGO BAN: The New Zealand Union ban on cargo to and from Fiji will cost more to New Zealand than it will cost the Fijian economy. A Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesperson says meat is the main New Zealand export to the islands.
FIJIAN REACTION: Meanwhile the Fijian chamber of Commerce has criticised the union move saying the boycott could lead to starvation and political disruption on the island.
FIJI STANDOFF: The military says it has managed to resolve an armed standoff when a Fijian-Indian soldier facing murder charges was held hostage at a police station.
OVERSTAYER AMNESTY: The Minister of Corrections Matt Robson says the Immmigration department is not considering an amnesty for Pacific Island overstayers.
ST STEPHEN SCHOOL: The Chairman of the St, Stephens board of Trustees says parents and staff will fight to keep the school open. The Maori school is suffering financial problems and has announced its closure.
SOCCER VIOLENCE: The British Government is considering taking new measures after violence from English fans again marred the Euro2000 international soccer competition.
WORLD CUP FEARS: There are fears that England’s bid to host the next World Cup will be jeopardized by the weekend violence.
ZIMBABWE RALLIES: More than 20,000 supporters for Zimbabwe’s movement for political change, the MDC, attended a rally yesterday, twice the amount that attended President Robert Mugabe’s election rally the day before.
US STARWARS PLAN: The United States plans for a state of the art missile defence system are facing more criticism, this time from the Pentagon in a report which doubts the system can be built on time.
BERT POTTER: The Children’s Commissioner says he will be writing to Housing New Zealand after convicted pedophile Bert Potter was placed in a house next two a school.
ARREST WARRANT ISSUED: A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Barry Jinkonsen the former partner of NZ First Candidate Suzanne Bruce after he failed to appear for a court hearing.
