GAS BLAST IN AUCKLAND: Several people have been injured and hundreds evacuated when a gas cylinder exploded at the Price Waterhouse building in downtown Auckland. Four office workers suffered cuts and bruising and were admitted to hospital.

HOME DETENTION: The Corrections Minister Matt Robson has extended home detention into the regions, and established 17 new regional programmes.

GILLON APOLOGY: The Alliance whip Grant Gillon is expected to make a full-some apology to the House today after a remark linking National MPs to bestiality.

MATES FOUND: A crane is lifting a car belonging to three Southland teenagers from river north of Invercargil. Three bodies believed to be of the young men have also been found.

FIJI SHOOT-OUT: The medical superintendent of a Suva hospital says one of the supporters of coup leader George Speight shot yesterday by the military is in critical condition.

ARMY MUTINY: The army mutiny on the second main island of Fiji has appeared to have stalled after the mutineers handed back arms and equipment to the military.

CERVICAL INQUIRY: The cervical cancer inquiry in Gisborne has heard that current law is restricting the ability to monitor health screening programmes.

TREATY SETTLEMENTS: The Government is defending it progress on making new Treaty Settlements with Margaret Wilson saying one claim may be settled this year. Earlier she had said no Treaty claims were likely to be settled this year.

WHALE SANCTUARY: The Australian Environment Minister Senator Paul Hill says Australia will continue in its efforts to create a South Pacific Whale sanctuary after the move

ECHELON INQUIRY: French prosecutors have begun an investigation into the US spy network Echelon to see whether the system is harmful to the interests of the French state. The French secret service will be involved in the investigation.

YOUTH TROUBLE: The police in Wellington are becoming increasingly concerned about the number of teenagers arrested outside the youth nightclub “Zeal”.
