- MEN’S CANCER: Hundreds of Gisborne men tested for prostate cancer have been given false results because laboratory staff at Gisborne Hospital have used testing equipment incorrectly for up to six years. Making the nightmare worse for health authorities is the fear that the testing could have caused men treated for prostate cancer to be incorrectly told they are cured.

- MAHUTA DEFIES ORDER: Sir Robert Mahuta, the figurehead of the financially stricken Tainui tribe, failed to respond to a "quit or be sacked" ultimatum by yesterday's 5pm deadline. Tainui's ruling executive council, Te Kaumaarua, started an internal process against the ailing 61-year-old last night, which is expected to result in his removal from all his Tainui corporate directorships by the end of the week.

- FIJI RESORT CONTROLLED: - SUVA: Forty tourists have been detained at one of Fiji's top resorts after landowners took control of the hotel. The tourists have not been harmed, and are not allowed to leave Turtle Island Resort in the Yasawa islands in northwest Fiji.

- POWER OVERCHARGE: Consumers are being overcharged by $200 million a year because of the way electricity lines companies have revalued their assets, an independent report published today shows.
