LOCAL GOVT NZ: Several members of the Local Government New Zealand Council say they will support the President and Vice President in their handling of departed chief executive Carol Stigley.

- REACTION OF COUNCILS: The chair of the Wellington Regional Council says most of the 86 councils around the country want a full formal meeting of Local Government NZ.

- JONES KILLER: The national coordinator of the Alternatives to Violence Programme says the killer of Journalist Kylie Jones was not responsible for running the programme in prison, although he did participate in the scheme.

- FIJI ASSAULT: Fiji’s military forces admitted they were wrong assaulting and beating five men on the island of Vanua Levu whom they thought were rebel supporters although they refuse to apologise.

- KIWIS IN AUSSIE: The Minister of Foreign Affairs says the idea of reciprocal citizenship rights for New Zealanders and Australians should be put on the agenda in talks between the two countries.

- IMMIGRATION SYSTEM: The Prime Minister Helen Clark says the immigration system needs an overhaul because NZ is not attracting enough skilled immigrants, some whom the system is turning away.

- BREAST CANCER: Doctors treating breast cancer patients in Auckland are going to ask patients if their treatments on their scheme can be put on a central register.

- ASSAULT CHARGES A Carterton woman has appeared in a Masterton District Court this morning no a charge of assaulting a young child.

- WEED CONTROL: The Auckland Regional Council is considering bringing in a small fly to control the mist-flower weed which is taking over large areas in Northland.

- MAORI ALLIES: The Labour MP John Tamihere has told the an Indigenous Peoples Conference that urban Maori should be viewed as allies and not competitors to traditional tribal authorities.
