- RUSSIAN SUB: Norwegian divers entered the Russian submarine at the bottom of the Barents Sea last night. They now believe there is no one left alive on the submarine Kursk.

Russian authorities are certain to face recriminations for their reluctance to ask for outside help when the Kursk sank.

- MINISTERS WARNED: Prime Minister Helen Clark issued a stern warning to ministers yesterday to tread carefully with independent organisations, after a “robust” exchange of views between the Maori Affairs Minister and the head of Women’s Refuge.

- MAORI CAMPING GROUND: Conservation Minister Sandra Lee has asked Urewera National Park managers to set up exclusive Maori camping grounds and spend $260,000 upgrading a no-exit road to land owned partly by the family of Maori activist Tame Iti.

- SHELL WON’T SWALLOW CHALLENGE: Global energy conglomerate Shell has vowed not to swallow petrol retailing newcomer Challenge – even if it does make an offer for Challenge’s parent company Fletcher Energy.
