- WEST TIMOR RESCUE: Kiwi choppers raced to the rescue after three UN workers were hacked to death and set on fire in West Timor. The NZ Air Force led the sortie to save dozens of workers. Three NZ choppers and an Australian chopper took part in the risky rescue. At 6pm Helen Clark was given notice of the crisis, and along with Indonesian President Wahid, authorised the mission. There’s been widespread international condemnation of the militia. Foreign Minister Phil Goff said Indonesia now must take action to disband the Militia in West Timor.

- MILLENNIUM SUMMIT – WEST TIMOR: The West Timor murders dominated first day of UN Millennium Summit, with Indonesia facing a hostile international community. Clark was amongst leaders calling on Indonesia to crack down on West Timor Militias. Helen Clark maintained that the deteriorating situation in West Timor puts NZ troops at greater risk.

- MILLENNIUM SUMMIT – MIDDLE EAST: The summit is also providing a chance to the future of Jerusalem, with US president Bill Clinton stepping up pressure on Israel and Palestine to get back to the peace table.

- HOKITIKA TORNADO: A Mini tornado ripped through Hokitika, on the West Coast, today. The storm broke several power lines and caused other damage.

- PALMERSTON NORTH MURDERS: Hundreds of mourners gathered in Palmerston North today to farewell the Mother and daughter who were murdered eight days ago. Police are again calling for the public to help, and have confirmed they have suspects.

- SYDNEY OLYMPICS: The Olympic movement’s zero tolerance policy on performance enhancing drugs has snared another victim, soon after several Chinese athletes withdrew, allegedly fearing being caught for drug cheating.
