- WAIRARAPA ABUSE: Three people faced charges in court today over the death of a Carterton toddler, sparking angry scenes. Two women faced manslaughter charges and the partner of one of the women faced a lesser charge. All were refused bail. Police say there may be more charges.

- WHANGAREI ABUSE: In Whangarei, a grandmother pleaded guilty to abusing her granddaughter. The girl has permanent brain damage from the abuse.

- HEALTH FUNDING: There is controversy over new criteria for the funding of health research. To receive funding, recipients must say how their research will benefit Maori. The government says the provision is vital to “closing the gaps” and improving Maori health.

- GOLDEN HANDSHAKE: The former Victoria University vice chancellor was paid out a large golden handshake after being forced to resign.

- ECONOMIC WOE: Latest GDP figures show the New Zealand economy has stalled in the June quarter, the biggest quarterly slow-down in two years.

- GREEK FERRY TRAGEDY: Grief has turned to anger over the Greek ferry tragedy as the first of the victims is buried.

- EX-PAT GOLD: A former New Zealander has won a gold medal for Australia in the Sailing. Another Aussie athlete with a kiwi connection was narrowly beaten for gold in the long jump – the Australian has family here and regularly visits.
