Inflation – Nzers Keep Peace In Solomons – Middle East Peace talks – Yemeni Bombing – Kiwi Sport Success

- INFLATION: Petrol and tobacco price hikes have pushed inflation to a five-year high. Economists warn worse is yet to come. The Consumer Price Index is up 1.4 percent, taking the annual inflation rate to three percent. Petrol is 30 percent higher than it was a year ago. The inflation rate will put more and more pressure on households doing their groceries, running their cars and paying for their houses.

- NZERS KEEP PEACE IN SOLOMONS: New Zealand is to keep peace in the Solomon Islands. Up to 20 unarmed New Zealand police and military personnel will be sent in over the next thirty days and are expected to stay for two years. They will be part of a 100 strong peace monitoring force.

- MIDDLE EAST TALKS: The threat of all out war in the Middle East is foremost on the mind of leaders in the region. A crucial summit in Egypt is to start in the next few hours. The key players will be the Israeli and Palestinian leaders, along with other world leaders including the United States President. Comments from the Israeli and Palestinian leaders have done nothing to inspire confidence there will be any positive outcome from the talks.

- YEMENI BOMBING: Yemeni officials are now closer to finding out who was responsible for the bombing of a U.S. Navy destroyer.

- KIWI SPORT SUCCESS: It has been a day of celebration for New Zealand sport. Chris Cairns and Chris Harris spearheaded New Zealand cricket’s first overseas tournament title, beating India in a remarkable fightback. Women’s squash player Leilani Joyce took the world no. 1 ranking by successfully defending her British Open Title. Hastings teenager Jeremy Yates claimed the world junior road cycling championship in France.
