Fiji Gunfight – Parry Guilty – Morgan Fahey – Dyson Admits Conviction – US Elections

- FIJI GUNFIGHT: Rebellious soldiers have mounted a mutiny in Fiji, gunfire continues at the present time at the Queen Elizabeth barracks. The situation is tense and confused, but it appears to be another coup attempt. NZ Foreign Minister Phil Goff said the Commander of Military Forces is safe. Today’s mutiny undermines Fiji’s fragile steps towards stability. Two soldiers are confirmed dead. There has been no unrest outside of the barracks.

- PARRY GUILTY: Gynaecologist Graham Parry has been found guilty of disgraceful conduct over his failure to diagnose cervical cancer in a patient, who is now terminally ill with the cancer. His notes and examination were found to be grossly inadequate. Dr Parry failed to conduct an internal examination, despite evidence of cervical bleeding. The tribunal said Dr Parry had no meaningful understanding of the obligations of professionals in his profession. He could be struck off the register, preventing him from practicing in medicine. Twenty-eight new complaints against Dr Parry have been lodged with the Medical Council following the high profile case.

- MORGAN FAHEY: The Court of Appeal has turned down a bid to extend the jail sentence against Morgan Fahey for sex crimes committed over years as a GP. He is currently serving 6 years.

- DYSON ADMITS CONVICTION: Ruth Dyson, who resigned her ministerial portfolios earlier in the week after being caught driving drunk, has publicly admitted she was convicted and fined over 20 years ago for possession of cannabis. An anonymous person tipped off the media about the charge.

- US ELECTIONS: With five days to go until the US presidential elections, no one is picking a winner, although most polls give George W. Bush a slight advantage. Formerly safe states are now at risk; California, previously a stronghold for the Democrats has been thrown open by the Ralph Nader factor.
