Melbourne Cup – US Elections – CYFS – ‘H’ Word

- MELBOURNE CUP: Brew, a Kiwi bred horse romped home to win the Melbourne Cup this afternoon. Brew is one of the best bred horses in the world. Another Kiwi horse, Second Coming, came third. The second place getter was Yippi Yi O. Some Kiwi punters had a more relaxed time at Elerslie Race Course in New Zealand, away from the madding crowd in Melbourne.

- US ELECTIONS: Polls open in a few hours for Americans to vote for who they want to be the next president. The contenders, Democrat Al Gore and Republican George W. Bush, have been making the most of the last few hours, trying to muster as many swinging voters as possible with ‘inspirational’ speeches. Ralph Nader on the Green ticket is the wild card of the election, contributing to the closeness between the main contenders by taking votes from Democrat supporters. The turnout is expected to be low, as it typically is in the United States.

- CYFS: The Government has rejected a call by the head of the Women’s Refuge to scrap Child Youth and Family Services. The Women’s Refuge head says community agencies should take over the services provided by CYFS.

- ‘H’ WORD: Sandra Lee is refusing to back down over her referral to the suffering of Maori in the 19th Century. While she didn’t use the ‘H’ word, holocaust, in Parliament today, she left it open to other members to suggest a word that would be more appropriate to describe the massive depopulation of native New Zealanders in the 1800s.
