Auckland Bashing – Kiwis Killed In Crash – Indian Earthquake – Wharf Pickets – Balloon Down
- AUCKLAND BASHING: The family of a young man bashed to death in Auckland say they feared for their son’s safety in New Zealand’s biggest city. He was bludgeoned to death in a central city street. The man’s mother said she had a feeling that her son’s move from the small Canterbury town of Rakaia to Auckland was ill fated. The boy’s father said he was a blackbelt in martial arts, and was 6 foot four tall and fit, so would have been difficult to overcome. Auckland police still believe taxi drivers and regulars in the central city area may provide the clues to the case they need, and have set up a hotline: 0800 violence.
- KIWIS KILLED IN CRASH: Two New Zealanders have been killed in a light plane crash in Australia, during a horror weekend for the country’s light aviation industry that saw three light plane crashes, and nine people dead. One crash took the lives of four police, another a TV personality.
- INDIAN EARTHQUAKE: Funeral pyres are burning day and night in India’s earthquake zone, as the estimated death toll rises to more than 20,000. There are few signs of life in the rubble of destroyed buildings, aside from the odd miraculous survival story. The New Zealand Government has pledged aid to India. Red Cross, Tear Fund, World Vision and UNICEF, are taking donations for the aid effort.
- WHARF PICKETS: Picketers are lining up again at the port of Bluff, as the dispute over the use of non-union casual labour on the wharf rolls on. Protesters are angry at the arrest of one woman for disorderly behaviour.
- BALLOON DOWN: Auckland turned on a
cracking morning today, but a hot air balloon came unstuck
in perfect conditions. The pilot and four passengers escaped
injury as the balloon gently crash landed in suburban hills.
