- TARANAKI FARMERS TAX: Finance Minister Michael Cullen had to withdraw a bill making Taranaki Farmers pay tax for Maori land they are leasing. Mr Cullen is copping flak at select committee level for saying he received advice that was not accurate.
- HUNT APOLOGY: Speaker Jonathan Hunt has apologised to the House today after some MPs took exception to a comment where he said some MPs have gotten so drunk they can’t remember what they said in the House. Mr Hunt said he stands his comments saying MPs don’t drink as much as they used to and said he meant to comment on Parliament’s past more than its present.
- MEDICAL COMPLAINTS: A Government ordered heath review says the medical complaints process is choked by red tape.
- MONTEITH’S BREWERY: Negotiations on the future of Monteith’s brewery in Greymouth have stalled before they have begun. DB say the union representing workers didn’t turn up to a meeting.
- HUSBAND MURDER: The murder trial of an Auckland woman accused of killing her tatooist husband with and axe has ended with a hung jury. A retrial is due in 5 months.
- ISRAELI AIR STRIKES: A wave of air strikes by Israel has targetted Palestinian military targets in retaliation for terrorist attacks.
- KYOTO PROTOCOL: The US has turned its back on the Kyoto agreement on global warming. The move comes as New Zealand announced an energy sustainability policy designed to save up to $900m a year.
- LEAGUE GOES DIGITAL: John Hopowati has been
banned from rugby league for three months for sticking
fingers up the anuses of three players in a game. Some are
suggesting he should face sex charges as well – in any other
scenario his unwanted probing would be indecent assault and
carry a penalty of 10-12 years jail.
