President Attacks – Lundy Murders – Murder Sentences – Australian Nightmare – Bashed Kiwi – Anger Management

PRESIDENT ATTACKS: The National Party President is launching an attack on his own party. President John Slater is taking a swipe at the National Party Caucus, saying he’s being blamed for the party’s poor poll showing, when it’s the caucus’s fault. Jenny Shipley wouldn’t comment on the attack. The race for the presidency is looking close, with high profile candidate Michelle Boag being pushed by Mr Slater. The public statement on the eve of the National party conference could swing the vote in his favour or have the opposite effect. It has made for some very grumpy MPs.

LUNDY MURDERS: Mark Lundy is going to trial for the murder of his wife Christine and daughter Amber. Two JPs ordered the trial at the end of preliminary hearings in the Palmerston North District Court today. The JPs asked Mr Lundy if he wanted to plead guilty, he said no. The trial could take place later this year or early next year.

MURDER SENTENCES: The Law Commission is recommending judges have the discretion to not sentence battered partners to life. Justice Minister Phil Goff is welcoming the proposal.

AUSTRALIAN NIGHTMARE: Joanne Lees, the tourist caught in an armed hold-up in Australia’s Northern territory, has relived her ordeal with police in an effort to find the gunman who abducted her and is thought to have shot dead her boyfriend.

BASHED KIWI: The kiwi bashed in central Sydney has been named. He is 30-year-old Edwin Linder. Police have had no response to an identikit picture of the attacker.

ANGER MANAGEMENT: Teenagers doing time at the youth unit at Rimutaka Prison have been taking a course to help them control their anger. Its first graduates finished the course today.
