Dunne Hails Parliament’s Historic Vote In Favour Of Taiwan

United New Zealand leader, Hon Peter Dunne, has hailed Parliament’s historic vote this afternoon in favour of the Republic of China on Taiwan.

Parliament unanimously adopted a resolution moved by Mr Dunne that:

“This House expresses it warmest congratulations to Chen Shui-bian on his democratic election as President of the Republic of China on Taiwan and looks forward to the further strengthening of economic and cultural links between the Republic of China on Taiwan and New Zealand during his term of office.”

“This resolution represents a break-through in New Zealand’s relations with Taiwan and is strong tangible recognition of the commitment of the New Zealand Parliament and every Party within it to both the future of Taiwan as a democratic nation, and to the strengthening of New Zealand’s relations with it.”

“It also acknowledges the very strong positive contribution those Taiwanese who have made their home in this country are making to modern New Zealand.”

“Overall, today is the most positive day in the history of New Zealand/Taiwan relations since the termination of full diplomatic relations in 1972.”

“I hope the Government will now follow the spirit of this resolution by working closely with President Chen Shui-bian once he assumes office next week to strengthen our mutual relations,” Mr Dunne says.
