Alliance MP Phillida Bunkle today met with a group of Graham Parry’s former patients and their partners from Keri Keri in the far North. Every one of these women, all of whom have suffered at the hands of Parry, are deeply concerned that, following a decision in Auckland District Court yesterday, he is allowed to continue to practice in obstetrics and ultra scan. A number of the group claim serious injuries from Dr Parry’s practice in these two areas.

The meeting was unanimous in supporting Ms Bunkle calling on the Minister of Health to establish a full scale enquiry to bring all the facts out into the open.

“There must be a full accounting for the extent of the problem,” said Ms Bunkle, “and the range of the injuries must be investigated. It is now imperative that there be a full documentation of all these cases.

“The women are clear that considering cases in isolation cannot deal with the problem,” she added. “There is an urgent need to establish the whole picture.”

A partner of one of the women affected, Don Nisbet, said at the meeting, “If Dr Parry was a car mechanic, he would be held strictly responsible for the injuries.”

Don’s partner Gael Nisbet who, after treatment from Dr Parry has suffered very serious complications, ongoing infections and severe pain, said “Following Cave Creek the Government has assured us that it is responsible for the quality of public bridges and structures. Now it needs to take responsibility for the quality of services such as health provided by the Crown.”

The group also expressed their dismay at the decision of the Medical Council not to pursue the outstanding complaints while Dr Parry was not registered. Another former patient, Gill Gibson, was told by the Medical Council that there was no more that could be done about her complaint while Dr Parry was already struck off. She is outraged that this factor has stopped the consideration of outstanding complaints against Dr Parry.

The group called on the Medical Council to immediately process this very large number of outstanding complaints.
