Education and Science (Angela Van Dam, SC-ES@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee did not meet this week. At its next meeting on Thursday, 13 June the committee will discuss its inquiry into decile funding in New Zealand schools, and the Estimates of Appropriations for Vote Education Review Office and Vote National Library. Public hearings of evidence on the Estimates are scheduled with Hon Trevor Mallard, 20 June, and Hon Marian Hobbs, 27 June.

The committee has called for submissions on the National Library of New Zealand (Te Puna Matauranga o Aotearoa) Bill, to be received by 1 July. The bill replaces the National Library Act 1965. The provisions of the bill address four elements of the National Library's operations:

- legal deposit provisions for electronic documents

- the relationship between the National Library and the Alexander Turnbull Library

- the Maori dimension to the library’s work

- the role of the library in working alongside other organisations.

Finance and Expenditure (Julian Kersey, SC-FE@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee met on 5 June to consider the inquiry into the issues raised by the 2000/01 financial review of New Zealand Post Limited and the relationship of those issues with Parliament’s ability to scrutinise State enterprises. On 6 June it reported on the Supplementary Estimates of Appropriations 2001/02.

The committee will meet on Wednesday, 12 June to consider the Monetary Policy Statement May 2002, the inquiry into issues raised by the 2000/01 financial review of New Zealand Post Limited and the relationship of those issues with Parliament’s ability to scrutinise State enterprises, and the inquiry into the revenue effects of fraudulent investment schemes.

Health (Michael Wilkinson, SC-Health@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee travelled to Dunedin this week to continue hearing submissions on the Smoke-free Environments (Enhanced Protection) Amendment Bill.

Justice and Electoral (Tracey Rayner, SC-JE@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee is not meeting again until 19 June, when it will continue consideration of the Estimates for 2002/03, the inquiry into the 2001 local elections and the Retirement Villages Bill. The meeting will be held in room G.005, Parliament House, and will be open to the public for hearings of evidence from 9.30 am to 10.00 am (on the Retirement Villages Bill) and from 10.20 am to 12 noon (on the Estimates).

Local Government and Environment (Marie Alexander, SC-LGE@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee met on both Tuesday, 4 June and Wednesday, 5 June to complete hearing submissions on the Local Government Bill. The committee next meets on Wednesday, 12 June to continue consideration of the bill.

Primary Production (Bob Bunch, SC-PP@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee met on Thursday, 6 June for an all day meeting. In the morning session, the Minister of Agriculture and Biosecurity was questioned about Vote Agriculture and Forestry and Votes Biosecurity for two-and-a-half hours. This was followed by consideration of Vote Fisheries and Vote Lands.

In the afternoon session, the committee completed the hearing of evidence on the Animal Products Amendment Bill and started consideration of the issues raised in submissions. It then further considered its inquiry into sustainable forest management.

Next Wednesday afternoon, the committee will meet to further consider the Animal Products Amendment Bill.

Regulations Review (Andrew Fieldsend, SC-RR@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee will next meet on Wednesday, 12 June, when it will continue its regular scrutiny of new government regulations and make progress on its consideration of two complaints relating to civil court fees regulations.

Transport and Industrial Relations (Lyn Main, SC-TI@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee is meeting on 12 June to consider the Health and Safety in Employment Amendment Bill. This meeting is not open to the public. The committee is required to report the bill to the House by 25 June 2002.
