Government Administration (Lesley Ferguson, SC-GA@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee is to meet for the first time this year on Thursday, 13 February in Wellington. It will hear evidence from Dr Bill Porteous, as chief executive, on the 2001/02 financial review of the Building Industry Authority.

The committee will also continue its consideration of the 2001/02 financial reviews of the State Services Commission and the Office of the Clerk. The inquiries into the weathertightness of buildings in New Zealand, and the operation of the Films, Videos, Publications and Classification Act 1993 will also be considered.

Health (Catherine Parkin, SC-Health@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee’s first meetings for the year will be in Auckland on 28 and 29 January. It will hear evidence on its financial reviews of three district health boards, as well as commence hearing evidence on the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Bill. The bill provides a framework for the regulation of health practitioners. It includes mechanisms to assure the public that a registered health practitioner is competent to practise. It also includes consistent procedures across the professions for handling complaints against health practitioners. The bill repeals 11 existing regulatory statutes.

On Tuesday, 28 January the committee will hear evidence on its 2001/02 financial review of the Counties Manukau District Health Board from 9.30 am to 11.00 am, on its review of the Waikato District Health Board from 11.30 am to 1.00 pm, and on the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Bill from 3.00 pm to 6.00 pm, and 7.15 pm to 10.00 pm.

On Wednesday, 29 January the committee will hear evidence on its 2001/02 financial review of the Northland District Health Board from 9.30 am to 11.00 am, and on the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Bill from 11.00 am to 1.00 pm, 2.00 pm to 6.00 pm, and 7.15 pm to 10.00 pm.

The hearings of evidence will be open to the public, and will take place in Conference Room One, Jet Inn Hotel, 63 Westney Rd, Mangere.

Justice and Electoral (Louise Sparrer, SC-JE@parliament.govt.nz)

It is expected the committee will next meet in the week the House resumes, on 12 February. At its next meeting, the committee is likely to continue its consideration of the Retirement Villages Bill, the Criminal Records (Clean Slate) Bill and the Clean Slate Bill. The date by which the committee is to report to the House on the Retirement Villages Bill is 28 March, while the report date for the other two bills is 2 May. Submissions have been called for from the public on two further items before the committee. The date by which submissions on the committee’s inquiry into the 2002 General Election are due is 17 March. The deadline for submissions on the Supreme Court Bill is 28 March and the bill has a report date of 16 June.

Maori Affairs (Miles Reay, SC-MA@parliament.govt.nz)

On 13 February the committee will consider the Maori Purposes Bill (No 2), and hear evidence from Te Mangai Paho (Maori Broadcasting Funding Agency) on its 2001/02 financial review.

Social Services (Graham Hill, SC-SS@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee will further consider the Residential Tenancies Amendment Bill and the 2001/02 financial reviews. The meeting will be closed to the public with the exception of the Minister of Housing giving further evidence on the financial reviews of the Ministry of Housing and Housing New Zealand Corporation for a brief period. All the financial reviews are due to be reported to the House by 28 February.

Transport and Industrial Relations (Kath Henderson, SC-TI@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee is not scheduled to meet next week. On 13 February the committee will hear evidence on the financial review of the Transport Accident Investigation Commission and the Maritime Safety Authority.
