Commerce (Kirstin Lambert, SC-Commerce@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee is scheduled to meet for the first time this year on Thursday, 13 February, when it will hear evidence on the 2001/02 financial review of Mighty River Power Limited, and receive a briefing on the Report of the Controller and Auditor-General on ‘Certain Matters Arising from Allegations of Impropriety at Transend Worldwide Limited’. This briefing is to be open to the public.

The committee will also consider the Rotorua District (Easter Sunday Shop Trading) Bill, which is due to be reported to the House by 28 February 2003.

Education and Science (Angela Van Dam, SC-ES@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee will meet for the first time in 2003 on Wednesday, 12 February. It will consider the 2001/02 financial reviews of the Ministry of Research, Science and Technology, the Education Review Office and the National Library.

Finance and Expenditure (Peter Hurndell, SC-FE@parliament.govt.nz)

On Wednesday, 12 February the committee will hear evidence on the Budget Policy Statement.

Government Administration (Lesley Ferguson, SC-GA@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee meets next week on Thursday, 13 February in Wellington. It will hear evidence from Dr Bill Porteous, as chief executive, on the financial and operational performance for the 2001/02 financial year of the Building Industry Authority.

The committee will also continue its consideration of the 2001/02 financial reviews of the State Services Commission and the Office of the Clerk, and its inquiry into the weathertightness of buildings in New Zealand.

Health (Catherine Parkin, SC-Health@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee will meet on Monday, 10 February from 9.00 am to 6.15 pm, when it will continue to hear evidence on the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Bill. This will be in room G.002, Parliament House, and will be open to the public.

The committee will also meet on Wednesday 12 February from 9.30 am to 1.00 pm, when it will continue its consideration of the Smoke-free Environments (Enhanced Protection) Bill and Supplementary Order Paper 148, and various petitions.

Justice and Electoral (Louise Sparrer, SC-JE@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee’s next meeting is scheduled for 12 February. The committee is to continue its consideration of the Retirement Villages Bill, the Criminal Records (Clean Slate) Bill and the Clean Slate Bill. The date by which the committee is to report on the Retirement Villages Bill is 28 March, while the report date for the two clean slate bills is 2 May.

Submissions have been called for from the public on two further items before the committee. The date by which submissions on the committee’s Inquiry into the 2002 General Election are due is 17 March. The deadline for submissions on the Supreme Court Bill is 28 March and the bill has a report date of 16 June.

Local Government and Environment (Marie Alexander, SC-LGE@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee will meet on Thursday, 13 February to hear evidence on the 2001/02 financial reviews of the Ministry for the Environment and the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment. The hearings will be open to the public.

The closing date for submissions on the Marine Reserves Bill has been extended until 28 February 2003. Please refer to the website for details on providing a submission on the bill.

Maori Affairs (Miles Reay, SC-MA@parliament.govt.nz)

On 13 February committee will consider the Maori Purposes Bill (No 2). Hearing of evidence from Te Mangai Paho (Maori Broadcasting Funding Agency) on its financial review has been deferred until 20 February.

Primary Production (Bob Bunch, SC-PP@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee’s first meeting of 2003 will be on Monday, 10 February. The hearings on the inquiry into the scampi fishery will commence at 1.30 pm with the Ministry of Fisheries as the first witness. The committee will be meeting every Monday (10, 17 and 24 February 2003) and every Thursday (13, 20, and 27 February 2003) during February to hear evidence on the inquiry. The venue for the hearings will be Room G.003 Parliament House.

On Thursday, 13 February 2003, the committee will also receive a briefing from the Controller and Auditor-General on the report on the Fish Conservation Levies (open to the public). It will consider the 2001/02 financial review of ASURE New Zealand Limited and the Wine Bill.

Regulations Review (Michael Wilkinson, SC-RR@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee will meet on Wednesday, 12 February to continue its regular scrutiny of new government regulations.

Social Services (Graham Hill, SC-SS@parliament.govt.nz)

Next week the committee will consider the financial reviews of the Ministry of Social Development and the Department of Child, Youth and Family Services and also consider further the Residential Tenancies Amendment Bill.

Transport and Industrial Relations (Kath Henderson, SC-TI@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee did not meet this week. It is scheduled to meet next Thursday, 13 February to hear evidence on the 2001/02 financial reviews of the Transport Accident Investigation Commission and the Maritime Safety Authority.
