Commerce (Michelle Malyon, SC-Commerce@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee met on Thursday, 28 August to further consider the inquiry into the New Zealand electricity industry. The committee also heard evidence on the Business Law Reform Bill.

The committee will next meet on Thursday, 4 September to further consider the inquiry into the New Zealand electricity industry. The committee will also continue to hear evidence on the Business Law Reform Bill. This will be open to the public.

Education and Science (Angela Van Dam, SC-ES@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee met on Wednesday, 27 August to consider the New Organisms and Other Matters Bill.

Next week the committee will meet on Wednesday, 3 September to hear evidence on its inquiry into teacher education and petitions on targeted funding for isolation.

Finance and Expenditure (Peter Hurndell, SC-FE@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee met this week to hear public submissions on the Taxation (Annual Rates, GST, Trans-Tasman Imputation and Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill.

The committee is not scheduled to meet next week.

Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade (David Sanders, SC-FD@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee met this week to continue hearing submissions on its inquiry into New Zealand’s relationship with Latin America. Further submissions will be heard next week. The committee will also have a briefing from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade on the situation in Iraq.

Government Administration (Lesley Ferguson, SC-GA@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee met on Thursday, 28 August to consider the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Bill, the Border Security Bill and the petition of Dr George Paterson Barton Vaitoa Sa to repeal the Citizenship (Western Samoa) Act 1982. The committee will next meet on Thursday, 4 September to further consider the petition, and will hear evidence from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Human Rights Commission and the Ombudsman of Samoa. This hearing will be open to the public.

Health (Catherine Parkin, SC-Health@parliament.govt.nz)

This week the committee heard evidence on the Human Assisted Reproductive Technology Bill and received a briefing on folate fortification. Next week the committee will continue hearing evidence on the Human Assisted Reproductive Technology Bill from 9.45 am to 11.30 am. This will be on Wednesday, 3 September, in Room G.003 Parliament House, and will be open to the public. The committee will also consider other items of business.

Justice and Electoral (Louise Sparrer, SC-JE@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee met this week to continue its consideration of the Supreme Court Bill. Consideration of this item continues at its next meeting on Wednesday, 3 September. The committee will also consider the petition of Lynley Hood and Dr Donald Brash and 807 others. The meeting is not open to the public. The committee is currently calling for submissions on two bills: the Care of Children Bill and the Lawyers and Conveyancers Bill.

Law and Order (Tracey Rayner, SC-LO@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee met this week on Wednesday, 27 August when it continued consideration of the Courts and Criminal Matters Bill, the Telecommunications (Interception Capability) Bill, the Independent Police Complaints Authority Bill, and the Corrections Bill. It also heard more evidence on the Corrections Bill.

Next week the committee will hear submissions on the Secondhand Dealers and Pawnbrokers Bill. This will be from 8.45 am to 12.25 pm in Room G.006, Parliament House, and will be open to the public. The committee will hear submissions on the Courts and Criminal Matters Bill on 10 September, with times to be confirmed.

The committee is calling for submissions on the Police Complaints Authority (Conditional Name Protection) Amendment Bill and the Sex Offenders Registry Bill. Submissions for both bills close on 17 September 2003. Copies can be purchased from Bennetts Government Bookshops. The committee requires 20 copies of each submission. Those wishing to include any information of a private or personal nature in a submission should first discuss this with the Clerk of Committee, as submissions are usually released to the public. Those wishing to appear before the committee to speak to their submissions should state this clearly and provide a daytime telephone contact number. Submissions should be to Tracey Rayner, Clerk of Committee, Law and Order Committee Secretariat, Parliament House, Wellington.

Local Government and Environment (Marie Alexander, SC-LGE@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee met on Thursday, 28 August and heard evidence from Hon Marian Hobbs, Minister for the Environment, on the inquiry into the alleged accidental release of genetically engineered sweet corn plants in 2000 and the subsequent actions taken. The committee next meets on Thursday, 4 September in Auckland to hear submissions on the Local Government Law Reform Bill (No 2), which relates to proposed amendments to the Dog Control Act 1996. The hearing will be from 8.30 am to 1.30 pm, and 2.30 pm to 6.00 pm at the Lakeside Convention Centre, Montgomerie Road, Manakau and will be open to the public.

Maori Affairs (Miles Reay, SC-MA@parliament.govt.nz)

On Thursday, 28 August the committee further considered the Ngati Tama Claims Settlement Bill. The committee will not meet next week.

Primary Production (Bob Bunch, SC-PP@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee met on Thursday, 28 August to further consider its inquiry into the administration and management of the scampi fishery.

Regulations Review (Michael Wilkinson, SC-RR@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee will next meet on Wednesday, 3 September to continue its regular scrutiny of new government regulations.

Social Services (Graham Hill, SC-SS@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee met on Thursday, 28 August to receive a briefing on staff fraud in the Ministry of Social Development from the Minister of Social Services and Employment, the Chief Executive of the Ministry of Social Development and the Controller and Auditor-General. The committee also continued to hear evidence on the Families Commission Bill. The committee will be conducting a site visit on 4 September to a Department of Child, Youth and Family Service centre at Epuni and a Ministry of Social Development call centre in Lower Hutt.

Transport and Industrial Relations (Kath Henderson, SC-TI@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee met after Question Time on Wednesday, 27 August to begin consideration of the Land Transport Management Bill.
