ACT wants tired stressed people working in rest homes

ACT Health Spokesperson Heather Roy is misguided, suggesting Four Weeks Leave shouldn't be awarded to low paid rest home workers, says Progressive Deputy Leader Matt Robson MP.

"Heather Roy obviously does not have the health of workers at heart. To suggest poorly paid rest home workers do not deserve the annual leave entitlement she herself gets is simply selfish.

"The health care of our valuable aged citizens is a serious issue. They deserve to be cared for by well paid, healthy, staff. ACT suggest that time off in lieu of working on holidays, and extending four weeks annual leave to workers is a bad idea. If they had the health and well-being of either the residents or the staff at heart they would be singing a different tune.

"The European economy has not fallen over because all workers are entitled to four weeks annual leave, and neither will the rest home sector. In fact, it is not only workers who benefit. People on leave spend money in the economy and that's good for business.

"One has to wonder whether ACT members would put their aged parents into the rest homes where people are underpaid, tired, stressed and under valued? And yet, they suggest other people should by denying rest home workers decent breaks.

"Four weeks leave is good for workers, good for their health, good for business and very good for families. A majority of MPs recognise that. ACT MPs are not in tune with the modern world. Our workers and our children are worth more," Matt Robson MP said.
