The committee did not meet this week and is not scheduled to meet next week.

Government Administration (Lesley Ferguson, SC-GA@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee met on Thursday, 24 October to consider its 2002/03 financial review of government departments and Crown entities.

Health (Catherine Parkin, SC-Health@parliament.govt.nz)

This week the committee met to consider its inquiry into the proposal to establish a trans-Tasman agency to regulate therapeutic products. The committee also reported on the petition of David John Turner and 240 others, requesting that the Mental Health (Compulsory Assessment and Treatment) Act 1992 be amended to extend the circumstances under which an indefinite treatment order can be issued.

The petitioner is concerned that the Act does not address issues related to the care of schizophrenic patients. The committee has recommended that the Government review the application of section 7A of the Mental Health (Compulsory Assessment and Treatment) Act 1992, especially in relation to principal caregiver consultation. The section requires clinicians to involve families in the assessment and treatment process.

The committee has also recommended that the Government review the guidelines issued under section 130(a) of the Mental Health (Compulsory Assessment and Treatment) Act 1992 to ensure better provision of information about the role of the principal caregiver.

The committee will meet on Wednesday, 5 November to hear evidence from the Ministry of Health on the 2002/03 financial review of the ministry. The committee will also consider other items of business.

Justice and Electoral (Louise Sparrer, SC-JE@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee did not meet this week. It will meet next week on Thursday, 30 October to hear evidence on the Care of Children Bill and to consider its financial reviews for 2002/03, and on Friday, 31 October to continue to hear evidence on the Care of Children Bill. The meeting on Thursday, 30 October will be open to the public from 3.00 pm to 6.00 pm and from 7.00 pm to 9.05 pm. The meeting on Friday, 31 October will be open to the public from 9.30 am to 12 noon and from 1.00 pm to 4.00 pm.

Law and Order (Tracey Rayner, SC-LO@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee did not meet this week. It will next meet on Wednesday, 29 October, when it will continue consideration of the Corrections Bill, and also consider the 2002/03 financial reviews. The committee will also receive a briefing from the Audit Office on the report entitled Co-ordination and Collaboration in the Criminal Justice Sector.

Local Government and Environment (Marie Alexander, SC-LGE@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee met on Thursday, 23 October to consider a member’s bill, the Resource Management (Costs) Amendment Bill. The committee reported on the bill today, with the recommendation that it not be passed. The committee’s report is available on the website.

The committee will next meet on Monday, 3 November, to hear submissions on the Resource Management (Energy and Climate Change) Amendment Bill. The meeting will be in Room G.003, Parliament House.

Maori Affairs (Miles Reay, SC-MA@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee did not be meet this week. It will next meet on Thursday, 6 November when it will hear evidence on the financial review of Te Puni Kôkiri, and consider the Ngati Tama Claims Settlement Bill.

Primary Production (Bob Bunch, SC-PP@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee met on Thursday, 23 October to consider its inquiry into the administration and management of the scampi fishery.

It will meet again on Monday, 3 November and Thursday, 6 November to further consider the inquiry.

Regulations Review (Michael Wilkinson, SC-RR@parliament.govt.nz)

This week the committee presented its report on the Subordinate Legislation (Confirmation and Validation) Bill (No 2). The committee will next meet on Wednesday, 5 November to continue its regular scrutiny of new Government regulations.

Social Services (Graham Hill, SC-SS@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee will not meet next week. When the committee meets again on Thursday, 6 November, it will begin its series of financial reviews by examining the Department of Child, Youth and Family Services.
