Commerce (Michelle Malyon, SC-Commerce@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee next meets on 26 August to hear evidence on an alleged breach of the Commerce Act in the Auto-glazing industry. This will be open to the public between 10.00 am and 11.00 am.

Finance and Expenditure (Peter Hurndell, SC-FE@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee did not meet this week. The committee next meets on 25 August, when it will consider the Public Finance (State Sector Management) Bill.

Fisheries and Other Sea-related Legislation (Miles Reay SC-MA@parliament.govt.nz,)

The committee meets next week to hear evidence on the Foreshore and Seabed Bill as follows: Tuesday 24 August, 3.30 pm – 6.00 pm Parliament House, Wellington Wednesday 25 and Thursday 26 August, 9.00 am – 5.30 pm and 10.00 am – 5.30 pm Alexandra Park Raceway, Level 5 Centennial Stand, Epsom, Auckland. Timings of meetings may alter slightly. Please check the schedule of meetings on this website.

All meetings will be open to the public.

Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade (David Sanders, SC-FD@parliament.govt.nz) The committee will travel to Waiouru next week for a site visit of the NZDF Army Base.

Health (Catherine Parkin, SC-Health@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee did not meet this week. The committee is currently receiving submissions on two items of business. The Injury Prevention, Rehabilitation and Compensation Amendment Bill (No 3) has been referred to the committee, for report to the House by 4 February 2005. The closing date for submissions is 24 September 2004. Copies of the bill are available from Bennett’s Government Bookshops and the other usual key stockists. The committee is also inviting public submissions on two petitions relating to caregivers’ wages. The closing date for submissions is Friday 3 September 2004. The first petition requests the House to address concerns regarding the level of home carer wages. The second requests that funding be made available so that caregivers’ qualifications can be recognised in their wages. Next week the committee will receive a briefing on the implementation of the WAVE report from the Ministry of Health. This will be open to the public from 10.00 am to 10.30 am, in room G.002, Parliament House. The committee will also consider a number of other items of business.

Justice and Electoral (Angela Van Dam, SC-JE@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee met on 18 August to hear evidence on the Civil Union Bill and the Relationships (Statutory References) Bill. Next week the committee will meet in Auckland on 23 August to hear evidence on the Civil Union Bill and the Relationships (Statutory References) Bill. The meeting will be held in the Hobson Room at the Alexandra Park Function Centre, and will be open to the public from 9.00 am to 1.00 pm, 2.00 pm to 4.45 pm, and from 5.15 pm to 7.00 pm. The committee will also meet in Wellington on 25 August to receive a briefing on human rights, consider the Electoral Matters Bill, and to continue hearing evidence on the Civil Union Bill and the Relationships (Statutory References) Bill. The meeting will be open to the public for the hearing of evidence from 10.15 am to 1.00 pm.

Law and Order (Tracey Rayner, SC-LO@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee did not meet this week. At its next meeting on 25 August the committee will further consider the Crimes Amendment Bill (No 2), Crimes (Drug Rape) Amendment Bill, and the Protocol against the Illicit Manufacturing of and Trafficking in Firearms, their Parts, Components and Ammunition.

Local Government and Environment (Beth Watson, SC-LGE@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee’s next meeting will be on 2 September.

The committee is inviting submissions on the Overseas Investment (Queen's Chain Extension) Amendment Bill. The closing date for submissions is Monday, 20 September 2004.

This bill amends the process of consent for an overseas person purchasing land adjacent to the sea, any river or lake by requiring consideration to be given to issues of public access.

Primary Production (Bob Bunch, SC-PP@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee will conduct a site visit to AgriQuality Limited’s Gracefield facilities on 26 August. Social Services (Graham Hill, SC-SS@parliament.govt.nz)

The committee met on 19 and 20 August in Auckland to hear evidence from Auckland and Hamilton based organisations on the Charities Bill. The committee will meet next on 26 August to consider further the Social Security (Long-term Residential Care) Amendment Bill and continue hearing evidence on the Charities Bill from Wellington-based sector organisations. This meeting is open to the public and the committee encourages all those interested to attend these meetings to hear what the submitters are saying. The submitters will be Philanthropy New Zealand, the New Zealand Council of Social Services, the Family Planning Association of New Zealand, the New Zealand Federation of Voluntary Welfare Organisations Inc., Save the Children New Zealand, the Interchurch Council for Hospital Chaplaincy, Victim Support, the Downtown Community Ministry, the New Zealand Federation of Family Budgeting Services Inc., the Wellington People’s Centre, the Cancer Society of New Zealand Central Districts Division Inc., New Zealand Radio for the Print Disabled Inc., the National Council of Women, Rural Women New Zealand, Pacific Institute of Resource Management, United Nations Association of New Zealand Inc., the Environment and Conservation Organisations of New Zealand Inc., BATS Theatre, New Zealand School Trustees Association, Wellington Wairarapa School Trustees Association, Redwood School, Tawas and the Independent Schools of New Zealand.

Transport and Industrial Relations (Kath Henderson, SC-TI@parliament.govt.nz)

There was no meeting this week. The committee will next meet on 26 August to resume consideration of the Employment Relations Law Reform Bill. The committee is now calling for submissions on the Transport Legislation Bill, closing on Wednesday, 15 September.
