National asks for select committee inquiry into TVNZ
National’s Broadcasting spokeswoman, Georgina te
Heuheu, has today written to the chair of the commerce
select committee requesting an inquiry into recent
developments at TVNZ.
Mrs te Heuheu says recent controversies at the state broadcaster raise serious concerns regarding the roles of shareholding ministers in relation to both board and management, the role of the charter and questions of confidence in senior management.
“Television New Zealand is a large crown-owned company which, as New Zealand’s largest broadcaster, has special protections written into legislation surrounding governance, especially in areas of news and current affairs.
“The commerce committee is the select committee which has previously inquired into matters relating to TVNZ. I believe it is the most appropriate committee to address these matters of serious public concern,” says Mrs te Heuheu.
