Tax payer should not cover Rae family negligence

United Future deputy leader Judy Turner has expressed her dismay regarding the drink-driving teens supplied alcohol and drinking with family members, who crashed their vehicle while evading police that left a passenger in hospital.

"The reckless attitude and actions of those involved is disturbing, but the blasé reaction and acceptance of those actions by the driver's parents is even more revolting, and worse it is dangerous," says Mrs Turner.

Reports claim that 17 year old Rae Rae has vowed to continue drink driving in the future, and his parents - who bought him the alcohol to binge on- have said, "it's only the first time" and he wouldn't be punished.

"With neither the driver nor the parents willing to take any responsibility, it comes down to the courts to impose consequences.

"The parents in this case should be required to significantly contribute to the resulting cost of their children's actions - this includes damage to property, court costs, hospital care and any other related costs.

"The cost should not fall on the tax payer to cover the deliberate negligence of these people.

"If this family refuse to stand up and take responsibility for their actions, then the law must provide a disincentive to re-offend, and insist upon some accountability to the public system that they rely upon to clean up their mess," says Mrs Turner.
