Westwind decision points to renewable future
United Future Energy Spokesperson Gordon Copeland is delighted with the Environment Court’s decision today to allow Project Westwind to proceed.
“This is great news for Wellington, great news for Meridian and great news for the future of sustainable energy in New Zealand.
“Project Westwind has the potential to supply almost all of Wellington City’s domestic energy needs.
“The energy sector comprises around 40 per cent of total greenhouse gas emissions, which makes the development of renewable energy sources all the more important.
“In 2005 only 0.3 per cent of our net primary energy came from wind power despite the vast potential for wind generation in New Zealand.
“One thing holding the renewable energy sector back has been the problem with obtaining resource consents and environmental permission for various proposals. I hope that this decision will set a precedent by encouraging more energy suppliers to consider renewables over traditional thermal generation.
“What worries me is that Meridian may decide not to continue with the project because of the loss of four turbines from the original proposal and soaring construction costs estimated at $120 million.
“I commend Meridian for their perseverance and I hope that despite financial setbacks they will still be able to continue with the project, said Mr Copeland.
