Easter Trading Petition to be presented today
George Dunning of Nelson will be presenting a petition opposing the extension of shop trading to Good Friday and Easter Sunday at the bottom of the steps to Parliament at 1.15pm today. He will be joined by Church and Union representatives.
Independent MP Gordon Copeland reports that George initiated the petition and collected many hundreds of signatures before being joined by a number of churches and unions from throughout New Zealand. In the end one man’s initiative saw thousands of signatures collected with churches and unions working together.
Mr Dunning decided that he would like to present the petition to Gordon Copeland because of Mr Copeland’s staunch opposition to the two Member’s Bills extending shopping hours to Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Both bills were defeated on their second reading. The second bill was voted down on the 16th of May, the same day on which Mr Copeland resigned from the United Future Party and on which the Anti-Smacking law was passed by Parliament.
