Turner backs prisoner rehabilitation programme
UnitedFuture deputy leader Judy Turner is calling for more government support for prisoner rehabilitation schemes that are showing results.
She's particularly impressed with the Sycamore Tree programme which she describes as 'a powerful experience'.
"Sycamore Tree is an intensive two week programme that brings offenders and victims of crimes together for their mutual benefit.
"Offenders get to connect with the impact violence has on victims, and victims, who volunteer to participate, are unequivocal about the help the programme has been for them.
"Over 9,000 prisoners will be released from prison over the next 12 months.
"Regardless of what one believes about parole, and sentencing issues, we can't ignore the stark reality that two years after release, 39% will be back in prison.
"It is time that we did the much needed research to identify where the success stories are in terms of prisoner reintegration.
"The programmes I am impressed with have several characteristics in common.
"Firstly they work in the prisons building relationships with prisoners and identifying which inmates are best suited to the service they offer after they are released.
"The understanding seems to be that reintegration starts the day an offender starts a prison sentence.
"Secondly they usually offer a wrap around approach that includes accommodation, employment and family services and clients are respected as individuals rather than seeing integration as a one-size-fits-all strategy.
"Currently it seems that most of Corrections money is focused on building new prisons.
"Surely where results are evident some money thrown at rehab and reintegration is cost effective and socially helpful," says Mrs Turner.
